Notary Public – Notarial Services
The services of a Notary Public are required for most legal documentation to be used in a Foreign country. The Notary will witness signatures, certify documents and copy documents as the Foreign jurisdiction may require. St John Wright who is an Associate Solicitor with the firm is a Notary Public and can provide these services.
Notarisation of the execution (signing) of a document means that the Notary has checked:
- Your identity; and
- Your capacity to sign; and
- Your understanding and willingness to be bound by the document
However, this does not mean that the Notary has advised you as to the wisdom or otherwise of signing the document. If, for example, you are buying a property in a Foreign country, you would still need legal advice from a lawyer in that country. You may also need valuation or other advice.
If you require notarisation of documents, you will need not only to produce the Foreign document, but also identification, usually in the form of an original current passport or photo driving licence together with separate proof of your address. Many Foreign countries require a further authentification process called “legalisation under the Hague Convention”. This involves sending the notarised document to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for an Apostille to be attached and which Mr Wright will arrange if required.
